Finally, Parag Agarwal was named the formal CEO of Twitter on November 29, 2021.
When asked about balancing the protection of free speech as a core value with the effort to combat misinformation in an interview with MIT Technology Review in November 2020, Agrawal said: “Our role is not to be bound by the First Amendment, but our role is to serve a healthy public conversation… focus less on thinking about free speech, but thinking about how the times have changed.” On November 29, 2021, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced his resignation and the appointment of Agrawal as the company’s next CEO. Following the announcement, Agrawal was chastised over a tweet from 2010 that stated, “If they aren’t going to make a distinction between Muslims and extremists, why should I make a distinction between white people and racists?” During a story on The Daily Show, Agrawal claimed to be paraphrasing Aasif Mandvi.
