After Ramesh Babu, Padmavathi, and Manjula, and before Priyadarshini, he is the fourth of five children of Telugu actor Krishna and Indira. Their ancestors are from Burripalem in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district. Babu spent much of his life in Madras, where he was raised by his maternal grandmother Durgamma and his family. Ramesh Babu used to watch after Mahesh Babu’s academic performance when Krishna was preoccupied with his film responsibilities. Babu used to play cricket at the VGP Golden Beach in Madras with his siblings on a regular basis. In the film Koduku Diddina Kapuram, he played a dual character (1989). Following that, Babu starred in Bala Chandrudu (1990) and Anna Thammudu (1991). (1990). Later, he returned to college to pursue his studies.
To preserve a tranquil environment, Krishna made sure that none of his children revealed his name during their schooling. He attended St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai, where he was classmates with actor Karthi. In an interview, Babu revealed that he and actor Vijay were longstanding friends who attended the same college before launching their careers in the film industry. Babu was a student who excelled in his studies. He graduated from Loyola College in Chennai with a bachelor’s degree in business. Following graduation, he met with director L. Satyanand in Vishakhapatnam for three to four months of additional acting training.
Early Career and breakthrough (1979-2003)
Babu visited the sets of the Telugu film Needa (1979), where director Dasari Narayana Rao shot a few parts of his as part of the story in the company of the former’s brother Ramesh, when he was four years old. Needa was his first film as a kid actor. After seeing Babu on the sets of Poratam (1983) at Vauhini Studios, director Kodi Ramakrishna suggested to Krishna that Babu be cast in the part of the protagonist’s brother. After being persuaded by the film’s crew, Babu consented to act in the film despite his initial apprehension. He went on to star in films like Shankharavam (1987), Bazaar Rowdy (1988), Mugguru Kodukulu (1988), and Gudachari 117 as a child artist (1989).
Babu made his acting debut in the film Raja Kumarudu, directed by K. Raghavendra Rao and starring Priety Zinta, in 1999. As a result of the film’s economic success, he began to be referred to as Prince. He was nominated for the Nandi Award for Best Male Debut. The following year, he appeared in two films: Yuvaraju and Vamsi. Next their box office failure, Babu featured in Krishna Vamsi’s Murari the following year. Murari was a pivotal picture in his career, and he regarded his role as one of his favorites. Murari was a financial success, and the Nandi Special Jury Award was bestowed to him. Despite the failure of his 2002 films Takkari Donga and Bobby at the box office, Babu got his second Nandi Special Jury Award for his work in the former.
Babu had two films released in 2003, the first of which was Gunasekhar’s Okkadu, which starred Bhumika Chawla and became the highest-earning Telugu film of the year, grossing Rs. 23 crores. For his performance in the film, he received his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu. Teja’s Nijam, in which Rakshita co-stars, was also released. The film was notable for being the first in Telugu cinema to use the Dolby EX surround system. Despite the film’s commercial failure, critics praised Babu’s performance, with Rediff.com’s Vijayalaxmi calling him the only incentive to see the film’s second half, which she described as a conventional narrative of vendetta. His performance in the film earned him his first Nandi Best Actor Award.
Stardom and career setback (2011-2014)
Naani, directed by S. J. Surya and starring Amisha Patel, was Manjula’s second project. While the Tamil version, New, with a different cast, was a commercial triumph, Naani was a box office flop. For his performance in Arjun, directed by Gunasekhar and produced by Ramesh, he earned the Nandi Special Jury Award. Both Babu and Manjula were devastated by Naani’s failure, so they took a short respite in Goa before returning to their other obligations. He decided to star alongside Trisha Krishnan in Trivikram Srinivas’ Athadu, whose script was accepted in 2002, before the production of Naani and Arjun began.
Athadu became one of the year’s highest-grossing pictures. For the producers and distributors, the picture was a financially successful enterprise. Babu’s career benefited from the film, as he won the Nandi Best Actor Award for his portrayal as a hired assassin. Athadu grossed a total of Rs. 22 crores at the movie office. Mahesh Babu is elegant and brilliant as a skilled murderer, according to Idlebrain, who awarded it a 3.25/5 grade.
Puri Jagannadh and Babu collaborated on the film Pokiri in 2006, which Jagannadh and Manjula co-produced. Pokiri, which was made on a $100 million budget and shot in six months, became the highest-grossing Telugu film of all time by the end of its run and was screened at the 7th IIFA Awards in Dubai. Y. Sunita Chowdary of The Hindu praised Babu’s performance, saying, “Mahesh’s quiet performance in Pokiri allows him to effortlessly reclaim the status of a star, overshadowing more questionable recent career choices.” For the second time, he received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu. Pokiri earned a total of 67 crores at the box office. His second film, Sainikudu, co-starring Trisha, was released in the same year to high anticipation but flopped at the box office.
Babu made his Telugu debut the following year in the film Athidhi, co-starring Amrita Rao. Ramesh Babu, Mahesh Babu’s brother, produced the film. UTV Motion Pictures paid 185 million for the film’s distribution rights, making it the company’s first Telugu film endeavor. Babu delivered the voice-over for Trivikram Srinivas’ film Jalsa in 2008.
Babu took a seven-month hiatus from films after Athidhi’s release, then signed Khaleja two months later, but the break was mistakenly extended for two years due to many delays. Babu’s grandma died during this time, as did his wife Namrata’s parents. Because the film’s shoot had been delayed for so long, Krishna was concerned for Babu’s career. Khaleja garnered mixed reviews from reviewers upon its initial release, and it was a commercial flop in India. However, it did well at the box office in other countries. “The pair of Mahesh-Trivikram presents a product that is watchable, enjoyable with nice comedy, a couple of well-orchestrated action moments and songs, and with a bit to take home as well,” Rediff said of the film. It’s Mahesh’s show all the way, much to his followers’ joy. Mahesh is the heart and soul of the film, effortlessly delivering language, action, dances, and emotions. Film Companion named the film one of the “25 Greatest Telugu Films Of The Decade.”
