Who is Justin Smollett? About Actor and Singer
Justin Smollett is an actor and singer from the United States. In 1991, he began his playing career as a child in films such as The Mighty Ducks (1992) and Rob Reiner’s North (1994). In 2015, Smollett starred in the Fox drama series Empire as singer Jamal Lyon, a role that was lauded as groundbreaking for its favorable portrayal of a black homosexual man on television. Smollett also played Ricks in Ridley Scott’s science fiction picture Alien: Covenant (2017) and Langston Hughes in Marshall (2017).
Smollett was charged with disorderly conduct in February 2019 after allegedly fabricating a hate crime assault. The charges were dropped the next month, but he was re-indicted in February 2020 on similar allegations stemming from the same incident. In December 2021, he was found guilty on the charges.
Early Career of Justin Smollett
Jussie Smollett, an actor and singer, was born on June 21, 1983 in Santa Rosa, California. He began singing at a young age. One of his earliest appearances was in Emilio Estevez and Joshua Jackson’s popular children’s hockey film The Mighty Ducks, released in 1992. Working on the film “was a terrific experience,” he subsequently told People magazine. Smollett then played the son of the title character in the 1993 TV miniseries Queen, based on a book by Alex Haley (Halle Berry).
Smollett featured in the sitcom On Our Own with his real-life brothers and sisters in 1994. Ralph Louis Harris played their oldest brother, who tried to look after them when their parents died, and he and his five brothers played orphaned children. Smollett also appeared in North, an adventure comedy starring Elijah Wood, in the same year.
Legal Issues of Justin Smollett
Smollett pleaded no guilty to providing false information to law enforcement in a 2007 misdemeanor case stemming from a DUI stop in which he provided police a false identity and signed his brother’s name on the summons pledging to appear in court, according to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office. Smollett also pled no guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a valid driver’s license, receiving a fine and two years of probation.
2019 hate crime hoax
Smollett informed police on January 29, 2019, that he was attacked outside his apartment building by two individuals wearing ski masks. He claimed they used racial and homophobic slurs and told him, “This is MAGA country,” a reference to President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again.” In the assault, he stated they used their hands, feet, and teeth as weapons. The two suspects then “poured an unknown liquid” on Smollett and tied a rope around his neck, according to a statement provided by the Chicago Police Department.
Smollett claimed that he was able to repel them. Smollett was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released later that morning in “excellent condition.” The cops were summoned at 2:30 a.m., and Smollett was wearing a white rope around his neck when they arrived around 2:40 a.m. Smollett said that the attack was motivated by his criticism of Trump’s government, and that he believed the purported assault was connected to a threatening letter he received earlier that month.
Smollett was charged with a class 4 felony for making a fake police report by a grand jury on February 20, 2019. Smollett turned himself in the next day at the Chicago Police Department’s Central Booking Station. Smollett “is under arrest and in the custody of investigators,” according to CPD spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi. All charges against Smollett were dropped on March 26, 2019, and Judge Steven Watkins ordered the public court file sealed. According to First Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Magats, the office reached an agreement with Smollett’s legal team in which prosecutors agreed to drop the charges if Smollett completed 16 hours of community service and forfeited his $10,000 bond.
On April 12, 2019, the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court against Smollett for the costs of overtime investigators spent investigating the claimed attack, which totaled $130,105.15.
Smollett filed a countersuit against the city of Chicago in November 2019, alleging that he was the victim of “mass public ridicule and harm” and arguing that he should not be forced to pay the city for the investigation’s costs.
Following the dismissal of the charges, prosecutor Kim Foxx was accused of bias and mercy. In June 2019, Foxx requested that the state appoint a special investigator to conduct an impartial investigation.
Smollett was indicted again by a Cook County grand jury on six counts relating to creating four false police reports on February 11, 2020, after a special prosecutor’s investigation was finished. Smollett’s allegation that his February charge breached the principle of double jeopardy was dismissed by a judge on June 12, 2020. Smollett’s trial began in November 2021, and he was found guilty of five of the six counts of disorderly conduct on December 9.
