Life History/ Career Path of Jack Ma

Ma got interested in English as a child, and during his adolescence, he worked as a guide for foreign tourists visiting Hangzhou. Ma failed the Hangzhou Teachers College entrance exam twice. (Mathematics was his weak spot.) He was admitted on his third attempt, in 1984, and graduated in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in English. He taught English at the Hangzhou Institute of Electronics and Engineering from 1988 until 1993. (now Hangzhou Dianzi University). He established his first company, the Haibo Translation Agency, in 1994, which provided English translation and interpretation.

Ma first encountered the Internet during a trip to the United States on behalf of the Hangzhou municipal government in 1995, and identified the absence of Chinese Web sites as a tremendous commercial opportunity. On his return, he started China Pages, one of China’s first Internet enterprises, which produced Web pages for Chinese businesses. However, he departed the company two years later, largely due to fierce rivalry from the communications corporation Hangzhou Telecom, which had launched a rival company, Chinesepage. Ma was the CEO of a Beijing-based Internet company funded by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation from 1998 to 1999.

He thought, however, that if he stayed with the government, he would miss out on the economic prospects brought forth by the Internet. Ma persuaded his ministry team to accompany him back to Hangzhou, where he founded the Alibaba Group, which established a Web site that allowed transactions between small firms. Ma believed that the small-business-to-small-business Internet industry had far larger growth potential than the business-to-consumer Internet market. Small firms paid a membership fee to be approved as reliable sellers on Alibaba, with a higher premium levied to businesses that wanted to sell to customers outside of China. Alipay was founded in 2003 to act as a third party in transactions in order to instill trust in online trade. Alibaba’s growth has been swift. In 2005, it drew the attention of the American Internet portal Yahoo!, which purchased a 40% interest, and in 2007, Alibaba.com raised $1.7 billion in its Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO).

Ma owns Château de Sours in Bordeaux, Chateau Guerry in Côtes de Bourg, and Château Perenne in Blaye, Côtes de Bordeaux as of 2016.

On January 9, 2017, Ma met with US President-elect Donald Trump at Trump Tower to discuss Alibaba’s business interests in the United States of America, which might result in 1 million employment openings in the next five years. At the 2009 Alibaba birthday event, he dressed up like a heavy metal lead vocalist and sang a portion of “Can You Feel The Love Tonight.” In the same month, Ma formed a joint venture with Sir Li Ka-shing to provide a digital wallet service in Hong Kong.

On September 10, 2018, Ma announced that he would leave his position as executive chairman of Alibaba Group Holding in the coming year. Ma refuted rumors that he was forced to step down by the Chinese government and indicated that he wanted to use his foundation to focus on philanthropy. On October 1, 2020, Ma formally resigned from Alibaba’s board of directors.
