Who is Elizabeth Anne Holmes?
Elizabeth Anne Holmes (born February 3, 1984) is a former biotechnology entrepreneur in the United States who was convicted of fraud. Theranos, a now-defunct health technology business that claimed to have revolutionized blood testing by creating technologies that could use shockingly little volumes of blood, such as from a fingerprick, skyrocketed in worth after Holmes founded and served as CEO.
On the basis of a $9 billion value of her company, Forbes declared Holmes the youngest and wealthiest self-made female billionaire in America in 2015. As allegations of potential fraud surrounding Theranos’ claims surfaced the following year, Forbes reduced its estimate of Holmes’s net worth to zero, and Fortune labeled her one of “The World’s 19 Most Disappointing Leaders” in a feature story.
Life History of Elizabeth Holmes
Elizabeth Holmes was born in Washington, D.C. on February 3, 1984. Christian Rasmus Holmes IV, her father, was a vice president at Enron, an energy firm that went bankrupt following an accounting fraud scandal. Noel Anne (née Daoust), her mother, worked as a staffer on a Congressional committee.
Christian later held executive roles in government agencies such as USAID, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the United States Trade and Development Agency. Christian Holmes has Hungarian and Danish ancestors.
Charles Louis Fleischmann, his second great-grandfather (and Elizabeth’s third great-grandfather), was a Hungarian Jewish immigrant who started Fleischmann’s Yeast. Julius Fleischmann, the mayor of Cincinnati from 1900 to 1905 and an entrepreneur, was one of Charles Louis Fleischmann’s children.
Criminal Charges
A federal grand jury indicted Holmes and former Theranos chief operating officer and president Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani on nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud on June 15, 2018, after a two-year investigation by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California in San Francisco.
Both defendants entered not guilty pleas. Prosecutors claim that Holmes and Balwani conspired to swindle investors in one scam and doctors and patients in the other. Following the indictment, Holmes stepped down as CEO of Theranos but remained on the board of directors.
According to Bloomberg News, Holmes and Balwani were investigating a possible defense strategy of blaming the media for Theranos’ demise, as well as whether journalist John Carreyrou’s reporting influenced government regulatory agencies unduly in order to write a sensational story for The Wall Street Journal. Holmes planned to blame Balwani, who “controlled” her to the point that she was unable to make her own judgments, according to later revealed records.
“Ms. Holmes intends to present evidence that Mr. Balwani verbally disparaged her and withdrew ‘affection if she displeased him; controlled what she ate, how she dressed, how much money she could spend, and who she could interact with – effectively dominating her and erasing her capacity to make decisions.” Holmes could potentially be working on a “mental flaw” case to explain why she was so easily manipulated by Balwani.

Rise and Fall Of Elizabeth
Holmes, now 37, founded Theranos when he was 19 years old and dropped out of Stanford to focus on it full-time. After a decade of staying out of the spotlight, Holmes began courting the press with promises that Theranos has developed technology that could precisely and reliably screen for a variety of conditions with just a few drops of blood drawn from a finger prick. In 2013, the company announced a major retail agreement with Walgreens, which corresponded with the launch.
Theranos attracted $945 million from a who’s who of investors, including Rupert Murdoch, Larry Ellison, the Walton family of Walmart, and former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ affluent family.
Theranos was valued at $9 billion at its height, making Holmes a paper millionaire. Her characteristic black turtleneck, which drew similarities to the late Apple CEO, was frequently featured on magazine covers. (She hasn’t worn that expression in court.)
According to O’Mara, the media adored Holmes as an intrepid entrepreneur working on a project that aspired to improve the world — and as a rare female founder at that.
After a Wall Street Journal investigation in 2015 revealed that the firm had only ever completed only a dozen of the hundreds of tests it promised using its proprietary blood testing gadget, and with doubtful accuracy, the dominoes began to fall. Instead, Theranos relied on established blood testing firms’ third-party produced devices.
Two years of blood test results were thrown out by Theranos in 2016. As part of the arrangement, Holmes and Theranos agreed to settle “massive fraud” charges with the Securities and Exchange Commission, but they did not accept or dispute any of the allegations. Soon later, Theranos went bankrupt.

Did you know about Elizabeth Holmes Facts!!
1. Privacy was everything, even with food
Holmes was picky about the information she shared with her team. According to Mercury News, her assistant Paige Williams, who worked for her from 2015 to 2018, informed the FBI that details like Holmes’ culinary preferences could not be shared with anybody. Williams claimed that she kept her grocery plans and shopping lists at home because she didn’t want others to know about her eating habits.
2. The Balwani relationship
Holmes dated Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani for almost 12 years before marrying hospitality heir Billy Evans in a “secret” ceremony in 2019. In 2002, Holmes, who was 18 at the time, met Balwani, her former second-in-command at Theranos, who was 37 at the time. They began dating in 2004, according to Refinery29. Balwani then joined Theranos in 2009. Williams told the FBI that the couple did everything they could to keep their connection hidden, but it soon became evident that they were running Theranos as a “partnership,” according to Mercury News.
3. Holmes’ ultra-strict schedule
Holmes produced previous notes in court regarding her rigid daily schedule, which she claims is the result of Balwani’s control over her life. The scribbled schedule indicates how she “thanked God” at 4 a.m. every day. She meditated from 4.14 to 4.45 a.m. She had an hour to shower, change, and get ready for her day when she woke up at 5.20 a.m. Between 6.30 and 6.45 a.m., she would eat her breakfast of banana and whey.
4. She’s a Jane Austen fan
Holmes told The New Yorker in 2014 that she can quote Jane Austen off the top of her head, but that she “no longer devotes time to novels or friends, doesn’t date, doesn’t possess a television, and hasn’t taken a vacation in ten years.”
5. Reaching out to friends
According to CNBC, Holmes enlisted the help of her former sorority sisters from Stanford University’s Kappa Alpha Theta to testify in her defense. According to CNBC, not everyone accepted the invitation, but a select group of ladies, mostly from Holmes’ university days, have been part of Holmes’ outer court retinue.
