Alokesh Lahiri, well known as Bappi Lahiri, was an Indian singer, songwriter, politician, and record producer who lived from November 27, 1952, until February 15, 2022. In Indian movies, he popularized synthesized disco music and sung some of his own songs.
In Bengali films, he had also achieved great box office success. Wardat, Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Sharaabi, Naya Kadam, Masterji, and other film soundtracks made him famous in the 1980s and 1990s. He ran as a BJP candidate in the 2014 Indian general election from Sreerampur (Lok Sabha constituency) in West Bengal, but lost.
Though he was most known for his disco-style compositions, in which he fused Indian music with worldwide sounds and youthful energetic rhythms, he was also noted for his orchestration and fusion of Indian music with international sounds. His tunes were mostly written for discotheques and dance numbers. He had his first break in West Bengal cinema with Daadu (1974), in which he had Late Lata Mangeshkar perform his composition.
For the 1985 film Aitbaar, he created music for two ghazals, “Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intezaar Aaj Bhi Hai” and “Aawaz Di Hai.” In the 1980s, he also composed melodic songs sung by Kishore Kumar in films starring Rajesh Khanna, either as duets with Asha Bhosle or Lata Mangeshkar.
Bappi Lahiri died on February 15, 2022, in Mumbai, at the age of 69. He was admitted to Criticare Hospital in Juhu, where he died at 11:45 p.m. A lung infection caused by obstructive sleep apnea was the cause of death.

Bappi Lahiri was born in Jalpaiguri to a Bengali Brahmin family. Aparesh and Bansuri Lahiri, his parents, were both Bengali vocalists and musicians who excelled in traditional and Shyama Sangeet music. He was the only child in the family. His maternal uncle, singer Kishore Kumar, is one of his relatives. Bappi Lahiri began playing the tabla when she was three years old. He was initially taught by his parents.
Bappi Lahiri has two children: Bappa Lahiri, a boy, and Rema Lahiri, a daughter. His son, Krishh Lahiri, is married to Taneesha Lahiri and they have a kid together. At the 63rd Filmfare Awards, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
In the presence of Rajnath Singh, the then-national President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Bappi Lahiri joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 31 January 2014 to run in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. In 2014, he ran for the BJP in the Lok Sabha constituency of Srerampur, but lost to Kalyan Banerjee of the All India Trinamool Congress.
