Life History/Career Path of Suneera Regmi
Suneera Regmi was quite interested in mathematics. Ever since she was in school, Suneera Regmi had thought, ‘What I will become in the future will be related to mathematics because she was not interested in biology.’
Even if she liked math numbers and formulas, she could not draw a straight line. She was not afraid of heights any other challenges. She let her dreams fly high.
After finishing her SLC from Hattiwan’s Little Angels, Suneera was confused about which subject she should choose of her interest.
Then her father Sudarshan Regmi suggested a college in India where she has to study only mathematics, chemistry, and physics. It was about aerospace engineering. Her father told her much more about it, scopes, career, etc.
Suneera was shocked to hear her father’s words. Then she studied in India from class 12 to post-graduate level. At 12, she had many friends. But gradually those friends left. Her best friend also went to study architecture and she was the only one girl to study aerospace engineering.
By the time she started studying in class 12 at Vivekananda College in India, the ghost of becoming an aerospace engineer was already in her mind. With the same guidance from her father, Suneera became the first registereded Nepali female aerospace engineer. She was the first woman to get a license from the Nepal Engineering Council in 2008.
She has been working as a Senior Flight Operations Engineer in Nepal Airlines Corporation for over a decade. Having worked for so long, no other woman has become an aerospace engineer. Therefore, Suneera had experienced that there are fewer women in this field.
She became the only woman in the class to graduate from the National Institute of Aeronautical Engineering College. That trend continued even after graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology.
As a single woman, she became the center of attention. The early days were difficult, and she became a laughing stock in the classroom. One of them even asked her to drop out of college. But she did not give up. Gradually, the behavior of male friends also changed and they also became friends. There was no question for her going to men hostels to do combine study. At that time the easy age of mobile-internet had not even started.
After reading with such happiness and sorrow, Suneera returned to Nepal. As a graduate teacher, she worked as an industrial course mechanic at Buddha Air for three months. She says that she worked there until she picked up the big tires of the ship. That job was for a credit course. After finishing her studies in 2008 and returning to Nepal, she worked for an airline corporation to study for a year. Determined to work there, she applied as a flight operations engineer.
According to her, there were about 25 applicants at that time, only two were selected. She was the only woman in the examination hall. She got this job through open competition.
Suneera Regmi's Dream and Expectations
In Nepal, however, aerospace engineering potential has not been exploited. According to Suneera, Nepal can also do the aerodynamic design of vehicles, fuel control by designing nozzles, and marine research related to water and ships. It was this diverse feature that attracted her to this field. She says that in order to expand it, research and development should be done in the center, laboratory, and educational sectors.
Suneera says that she is working hard as well to fulfill the needs of her family. She was at home with her father’s encouragement and family. It has been 12 years since she got married and started living with her husband and mother-in-law. Her husband is an environmental researcher and her mother-in-law has also retired after working in the field of environment. “In the beginning, they were scared to see my work,” she said.
She encourages women like her who want to come to this field and describes a lot of its potential. She says, “Although this subject is difficult to read, it has a lot of potentials. You can work in all areas from the sky to the sea. Women should not underestimate themselves. “
Suneera does not underestimate herself and keeps her imagination tied. Her dream now is to go to the moon or space.
She says, ‘So far no woman from Nepal has reached space or the moon. I don’t have to get there. But I want someone to come. ‘She hopes that she will be an inspiration for the women to study such kinds of subjects. Nothing is difficult for women, If they want then they can do and achieve more than of men.
